A Level - Costume

For this project, I decided to look at the brief of ‘Costume’; looking at the subject theme of nature, in particular flowers, leaves, and water. To help me decide this, I researched and analysed a number of artists, initially to explore their techniques. I then decided to look at the work of Silvia Chiteala and Laura Cazacu, Irene Sharaff, and techniques such as ruching, draping, ruffling, and gathering. To help me explore this work and theme I gathered research using observational drawing, my own photographs, and images from the internet. To help inspire me I looked at artists’ work in more detail to influence my techniques, materials, and processes. From this, I will be able to produce design ideas and experiments, which will allow me to develop a final piece which includes a ballet tutu and corset bodice influenced by my research.

Evaluation of the Project.

In this project, I chose to use flowers and the use of techniques such as ruffling and gathering as a part of nature to convey my theme and initial aims. I was inspired by ballets and the work of Irene Sharaff, Silvia Chiteala and Laura Cazacu. For the development of my final design, I first looked at the different shapes and lengths of tutus and decided on a short and rounded shape. I next looked at the neckline and sleeves of the bodice. I ended up choosing short ruffled sleeves with a sweetheart neckline. so far I am happy with the initial designs and research, and drawings done for this project. To improve it further I will develop my ideas to create refined designs and eventually a final design. I will also aim to create small and large scale samples for my techniques with notes along the way explaining my ideas. This will then prepare me to make my final piece.
